Chapter 1

Haunted UX

The neon sign above the micro-kitchen buzzed with a low, predatory hum. It's hot-pink letters, Move Fast, Break Feelings, cast a soft, artificial glow over the premium espresso machine. At 8:12 AM, the open-plan office was still half-asleep. It was the kind of liminal, under-caffeinated hour when nothing supernatural should reasonably occur.

Two facilities workers navigated a heavy dolly across the polished concrete floor, their steel-toed boots squeaking rhythmically against the pristine gray epoxy. Strapped to the cart was an enormous, baroque monstrosity wrapped in a quilted moving blanket. Through the gaps, a frame of tarnished gold leaf peeked out, revealing cherubs with hollow, weeping eyes and vines twisted into impossible, thorny knots. It looked like it had been violently pried from the wall of a crumbling European palace and accidentally rerouted to a Silicon Valley tech incubator.

“Where do you want the… medieval thing?” the first worker asked, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow.

The second consulted a digital clipboard. “Manifest says ‘antique mirror, possibly cursed.’ Marketing ordered it for a growth-hacking campaign.”

Chloe, the office manager, barely look up from her iPad where she was in a brutal, high-stakes battle with the weekly cold-brew logistics. “Break room,” she said, flicking her stylus toward the far corner. “Just don’t block the kombucha tap.”

They unceremoniously rolled the artifact into place, yanked off the moving blanket, and left it standing between a stainless-steel toaster and a wicker basket of organic avocado chips. It looked like a portal that had catastrophically miscalculated its coordinates.

The glass was dark, deep, and viscous, rippling gently like pooled oil. If anyone had paused long enough to listen over the ambient whine of the server stacks, they might have heard a low, resonant hum vibrating from its depths. No one did.

By 8:45 AM, the morning migration began. Employees drifted through the glass doors with iced oat-milk lattes the size of their heads, their eyes glazed and their brains actively buffering.

Leo, a senior engineer whose oversized black hoodie had outlived three separate product pivots, stopped short. His reflection in the mirror looked oddly, unsettlingly crisp, the silvered surface sharpening every fine line of exhaustion on his face.

“Why is there a Renaissance artifact next to the toaster?” he asked, squinting.

Priya, the lead designer, circled the frame like a museum curator evaluating a masterpiece forgery. “It’s giving… haunted UX,” she murmured, tapping a fingernail against a carved gold vine. “Look at those bevels. Skeuomorphism is dead, someone tell the Dark Ages.”

Jax, the founder, swept into the kitchen wearing a flawless black turtleneck and the kind of manic confidence that only came from two TEDx talks and zero hours of sleep. He studied the mirror, stroked his jawline, and nodded once. “No, it’s a vibe. We’re building a brand ecosystem here. It represents reflection, transparency, and authenticity. Leave it.”

The mirror’s glass pulsed faintly with a sudden, deep violet, then went still. No one noticed. Slack notifications were infinitely more compelling.

Then came Toby. Nineteen, chronically underpaid, and solely responsible for the snack-drawer symmetry, Toby was waiting for his cinnamon-raisin bagel to finish toasting. Catching his reflection in the ancient glass, he smirked. Because irony was his native language, he leaned his elbows on the counter and decided to play into the bit.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall,” he said, his voice dripping with deadpan, Gen Z detachment. “Who’s the fairest of them all.”

The air fryer abruptly clicked off.

The ambient drone of the server room flatlined.

The room temperature plummeted a sharp, shivering five degrees.

The mirror’s surface instantly churned, swirling into a blinding vortex of starlit, cosmic darkness. A voice rose from its depths, deep, thundering, and echoing as if it had traveled through miles of forgotten stone corridors.

“THOU HAST SPOKEN THE ANCIENT WORDS. STATE THY DESIRE, MORTAL.”

Toby’s smirk evaporated. His jaw dropped, and his bagel shot violently out of the toaster, bouncing off the floor and rolling into a corner.

Chaos detonated.

The pressurized kombucha tap burst under the sudden wave of psychic energy, spraying ginger-lemon brew across the glass whiteboards. A sales rep screamed, dropping a mug of matcha.

Sarah from HR materialized in the doorway with predatory, supernatural efficiency. She took in the swirling cosmic vortex, then fixed her icy gaze on Toby.

“Is this a new software integration?” she asked, her voice entirely flat. “Because if this is an unannounced team-building exercise, we need to discuss a psychological safety framework.”

The mirror flared a dangerous, angry crimson.

“I AM THE ORACLE OF AGES,” it thundered, rattling the acoustic ceiling tiles. “BOUND TO TRUTH. BOUND TO ANSWER ALL INQUIRIES OF THE EARTHLY REALM.”

Leo stepped forward, adjusting his blue light glasses. “Cool. Quick technical question: can it connect to Slack? Or is it more of a webhook situation? We use Zapier for automation.”

The mirror vibrated with what could only be described as profound, ancient irritation.

Slowly, the swirling starlight began to dim. The Oracle seemed to actively process its surroundings, taking in the harsh fluorescent LED panels, the neon sign, the beanbag chairs, and the whiteboard scrawled with half-erased bullet points about “Q3 OKRs” and “synergistic scalability.”

“WHAT REALM IS THIS?” it demanded, its booming voice suddenly tinged with deep confusion. “WHERE ARE THE QUEENS OF ROYAL BLOOD? WHERE ARE THE COURTS OF THE CHOSEN? WHERE IS THE THRONE OF BONE?”

Jax stepped forward, his palms open in a classic venture-capitalist gesture of welcome. “You’re in a Series A startup in SoMa, my friend. We’re disrupting the prop-tech space.”

The mirror froze. The cosmic glow faded into a weary, profoundly defeated gray.

“…A curse,” the Oracle whispered, sounding entirely broken. “This is a curse. The dark wizards have banished me to a realm of utter madness.”

Jax clapped his hands together, absolutely delighted. “Okay team, pivot. New idea. We’re keeping it. It’s too weird to return, and honestly, the engagement metrics on this are going to be insane. Let’s get it onboarded by Monday.”

From deep within the ancient glass, the Oracle of Ages exhaled a long, hopeless sigh.
