What up next: Synthetic Personas

Social media already feels like an old machine. You can hear it in the way creators talk about burnout, the way platforms keep feeling like they are  recycling the same five ideas. And if you’re a developer living inside the code, watching the models get sharper and the pipelines get faster, you can feel the shift coming. The next decade won’t be an upgrade; it will be a replacement.

There are the new synthetic personas, something already being used in China by social media businesses with surprising charm,  I anticipate they are going to be the first real major change in the new landscape of algorithms and social media. They may seem like gimmicky AI influencers brands play with now, but soon they will have full identities: persistent, expressive, tireless. They’ll talk in every language, adapt to every subculture, and generate content, and once they start showing up in feeds with regularity, everything will shift.

I anticipate that most creators will become hybrids without even realizing it. They’ll use AI to draft their posts, clean their audio, generate their avatars, and maintain their engagement loops. They’ll build alternate versions of themselves,  multilingual, stylized, tireless  and again, I anticipate those versions will start to outperform the original. Somewhere in that process, the line between “me” and “my model” will blur until it doesn’t matter which one is speaking, and sadly, the audience probably won’t care.

The algorithm definitely won’t.

Because the algorithm is the real decision maker now. It doesn’t look for charisma or authenticity or whatever the platforms used to pretend they valued. It looks for engagement curves, retention arcs, emotional pacing. The next decade won’t be about who gets discovered; it’ll be about who gets selected by the algorithm. By then, social media may become clusters of synthetic identities, avatar driven storylines, autonomous agents interacting with each other.
